Today marks the first yahrzeit (the Jewish anniver

Today marks the first yahrzeit (the Jewish anniversary of a death) of October 7th, when Hamas launched the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust. Citizens from countries around the world, including the US, France, Thailand, and more, were also among those murdered and taken hostage. ⁠
⁠
We will be lighting a yahrzeit candle today to honor the memory of one of these victims: Somkuan Pansa-ard. Somkuan was a Thai national who came to Israel three months earlier to earn money to support his family as their sole breadwinner. According to @internationalintrigue (a highly informative and entertaining daily newsletter on everything going on around the world for anyone interested), the half a trillion dollar coffee sector is on the increase... both in terms of price and consumption.⁠

For example, in China, coffee demand has doubled in a decade, even if it's still only the world’s 7th market. The Chinese are only drinking an average of 13 cups a year. By way of comparison, the US average is 380 cups per year!⁠

The Mid-Autumn Festival (today), has been celebrated in China since the early Tang dynasty (618–907 AC).⁠
⁠
Mooncakes are one of the most recognizable parts of Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations. These small, round, and sweet pastries symbolize the reunion of family. Traditionally, mooncakes are filled with lotus paste and salted egg yolk, but nowadays they come in various flavors such as red bean, black sesame, and even ice cream. Interestingly, they are also typically around 800 calories per cake!⁠
⁠
Mooncakes hold multiple significances. They are offered to the moon as a sacrifice and gifted to loved ones as a wish for a prosperous life. The act of sharing mooncakes is also a symbol of unity and togetherness among family and friends.⁠

I’m grateful to be in LA this week for my nephew’s first day of pre-school. With kids, everything feels like a series of firsts—first smile, first laugh, first word, first steps… and then the firsts start to get bigger and bigger, like the first day of school. Each new experience can be so transformative.⁠
⁠
Watching my nephew this week got me thinking about "firsts" in our adult lives. The older we get, the more easily they can blend into the background of our daily routines, almost like we stop noticing them. But they're still there—whether we choose to pay attention or not.⁠
⁠
When you move to a new country or experience a new culture, firsts become impossible to ignore. I see this all the time with expats—stepping into unfamiliar surroundings can bring a wave of new beginnings: the first conversation attempted in a new language, the first time navigating a unfamiliar grocery store, the first new friend. And, of course, the inevitable first time you truly feel at home somewhere far away from what’s familiar.⁠
⁠
Even today, after years of working with expats and global leaders, I still experience new "firsts" regularly: the first time I work with someone from a new country, the first time I hear a unique perspective that expands my worldview (recently someone asked why public bathrooms in the US have gaps where you can see in!), or the first time I visit a place that I never expected to find myself in.⁠
⁠
Here’s to all the firsts—no matter how big or small—and the reminder that, no matter where we are in life, they’re still out there waiting to be discovered. Even better if we approach them with the same wonder and curiosity that kids do!⁠

By this point in the year, most countries have already celebrated “Labor Day." Approximately 100 countries pay tribute to labor unions and the struggles of the working class on May 1st. ⁠

In the US (and Canada) though, Labo(u)r Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September. ⁠
⁠
And if you think you work long hours… At the end of the 19th century, the typical American was working seven days a week for 12 hours a day in poor conditions, for little pay, in an industrial environment! ⁠
⁠
In September 1882, the Central Labor Union organized a parade where 10,000+ workers gave themselves the day off (without pay) and marched from NYC’s City Hall to Union Square. ⁠
⁠
A few years after that NYC parade, workers were protesting in Chicago’s Haymarket Square, demanding an eight-hour workday. A bomb went off and killed police officers and civilians alike. Countries that celebrate International Workers Day on May 1st do so in connection with this May 1886 demonstration to show solidarity with worker protests. However, when US President Cleveland made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894, he intentionally distanced it from the tragic Haymarket Square events.⁠
