Insightful book alert for anyone interested in cul Insightful book alert for anyone interested in culture and history!

In his book, "A History of the World in Six Glasses," Tom Standage traces six drinks—beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola—and shows how each shaped commerce, society, and daily life in its era.

Three alcoholic, three caffeinated, all pivotal in their time.

Measurement systems rarely spark debate, yet they Measurement systems rarely spark debate, yet they quietly shape how we navigate everyday life, from checking the weather to buying screws in the right size.

Most of the world uses metric units. The United States still relies on imperial measurements like inches, miles, and gallons. Liberia and Myanmar use mixed systems, including older British and customary units.

It may look like a few countries refusing to move on, but the reality is rooted in history, economics, and habit. Even countries that “converted” still live with hybrids:

🇨🇦 Canada sells gasoline by the liter but tracks weight in pounds

🇬🇧 Drivers in the UK follow speed limits in miles, yet medical charts use metric

🇦🇺 Australia switched to metric in the 1970s, but recipes, wine, and portion sizes often still follow older conventions

These mixed systems are a reminder that standardization rarely marches in a straight line.

Whether you’re team metric or imperial, check out the infographic at the link in bio. It makes conversions easier and helps you see when units collide. 😉

What’s in a name? In Iceland, quite a lot What’s in a name?

In Iceland, quite a lot.

A name doesn’t just identify someone. It reflects family connection, language, and a strong commitment to tradition.

Instead of fixed family surnames, Iceland uses a patronymic (and sometimes matronymic) system. A child’s last name is created from a parent’s first name:

-son for sons
-dóttir for daughters

That means siblings can have different last names. And last names don’t necessarily tell you who is related to whom.

Parents can also choose to pass down the mother’s name, a practice that’s becoming more common and reflects Iceland’s broader focus on gender equality.

There are even guidelines around first names. To preserve the language, new names must be approved and fit Icelandic grammar.

And one more thing: in everyday life, people go by their first names. Even in professional settings. It’s a small shift, but it says a lot about how identity and hierarchy are viewed.

Pakikisama (from paki “please” + sama “to go Pakikisama (from paki “please” + sama “to go along”): companionship or going along with others.

Maintaining smooth relationships and group harmony is at the heart of Filipino culture. Workplaces in the Philippines often feel like extended families, where cooperation and camaraderie drive productivity.

Colleagues go out of their way to help one another, and leaders are expected to be approachable and supportive.

To build trust, take time to get to know people personally. A friendly greeting, remembering personal or professional details, or sharing a coffee break goes a long way. Filipinos appreciate genuine warmth and are quick to reciprocate with loyalty and enthusiasm. Participating in informal team activities or joining small celebrations signals respect and strengthens connections.

While pakikisama encourages collaboration and goodwill, it can sometimes prioritize group harmony over blunt honesty. So, remember to be mindful of relationship dynamics.

Chag Sameach to those celebrating Passover tonight Chag Sameach to those celebrating Passover tonight!

At many Seders, the evening begins with a moment of curiosity: the Four Questions.

Traditionally, the youngest person at the table asks them, starting with Ma Nishtana: “Why is this night different from all other nights?” It’s a simple question that opens the door to the entire Passover story: a journey from slavery to freedom.

We really appreciate that a central part of the tradition is… asking questions. Curiosity isn’t just welcomed, it’s built into the ritual.

If you’re feeling curious yourself, we put together a short Passover quiz. You might know more than you think. 😉 Find it at the link in bio.

Wishing everyone celebrating a meaningful and joyful holiday.

Nowruz arrives on March 20th, welcoming spring and Nowruz arrives on March 20th, welcoming spring and a new year for millions across the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, and the global diaspora. With more than 3,000 years of history, it’s a celebration rooted in renewal, clearing out last year’s challenges and creating space for good fortune.

Many households begin preparing with khooneh tekouni, a deep cleaning ritual meant to sweep away lingering negativity. Families also gather around a Haft-Sin table, where seven symbolic items—like sprouts for rebirth and coins for prosperity—reflect hopes for the year ahead.

The traditions continue for nearly two weeks, ending with Sizdah Bedar, a day spent outdoors to release old misfortunes and welcome positive energy into the year to come.

For anyone living or working across cultures, Nowruz offers a powerful reminder of how ritual anchors connection and renewal. We’ve shared more about its history and customs in our link in bio.

Ramadan Mubarak! 🌙 In 2026, Ramadan bega Ramadan Mubarak! 🌙

In 2026, Ramadan began on the evening of February 17th and ends on March 19th. Its timing is determined by the sighting of the new moon, observed locally around the world.

The name “Ramadan” comes from the Arabic root ramad, linked to the ideas of heat and burning. Historically, this reflects the summer months when the month originally occurred. During Ramadan, common greetings include Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem, wishing others a blessed or generous month.

Ramadan is also a time for reflection and spiritual focus. Muslims remember that the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed during this month. Many spend more time praying, reflecting, and connecting with their faith.
