Ramadan Mubarak! 🌙 In 2026, Ramadan bega Ramadan Mubarak! 🌙

In 2026, Ramadan began on the evening of February 17th and ends on March 19th. Its timing is determined by the sighting of the new moon, observed locally around the world.

The name “Ramadan” comes from the Arabic root ramad, linked to the ideas of heat and burning. Historically, this reflects the summer months when the month originally occurred. During Ramadan, common greetings include Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem, wishing others a blessed or generous month.

Ramadan is also a time for reflection and spiritual focus. Muslims remember that the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed during this month. Many spend more time praying, reflecting, and connecting with their faith.

Welcome to Super Bowl Sunday! 🏈 It’s t Welcome to Super Bowl Sunday! 🏈

It’s the culmination of a season where 32 teams (16 in the American Football Conference or AFC and 16 in the National Football Conference or NFC) have played 17 games each.

We’ll help you with the math. That’s 272 games!

American football is a complex game that even many Americans would struggle to explain. We’re here to break it down for you though. Because if #culturematters, then understanding American football matters too.

At the link in bio, you can find out all about the coin toss, who does what, how long the game actually takes, and even where else in the world you can find "American" football.

PS. Want to "huddle around" for a fun fact? 😉

The huddle, where football players gather closely together to discuss strategy, started with the Gallaudet University football team in the late 19th century. (Gallaudet University is a university for the deaf and hard of hearing located in Washington, D.C.) The team huddled to prevent the opposing team from seeing their sign language signals and gaining a tactical advantage. This innovation eventually spread to other football teams, and today, the huddle is a standard part of the game!

Kölle Alaaf! (Cologne above all else!) 🎉

Carnival season is gearing up in Cologne, and the city is about to shift into full Fastelovend mode. This year, the Kölsche Karneval runs from February 12th to 17th, transforming Germany’s fourth-largest city into a kaleidoscope of color, costumes, and tradition.

While Carnival technically begins each year on 11.11 at 11:11 AM, the real energy builds as the “fifth season” approaches its famous six-day whirlwind, stretching from Weiberfastnacht (Fat Thursday) all the way through Aschermittwoch (Ash Wednesday). Locals lovingly call these the “crazy days,” and they earn the title.

And of course, no celebration is complete without Krapfen, the jelly-filled pastries that seem to disappear faster than you can say “Alaaf!”

If you’re curious about the history, quirks, and uniquely Kölsch traditions behind it all, you’ll find 11 fun facts waiting for you at the link in our bio.

Today is World Snow Day and we know that somewhere Today is World Snow Day and we know that somewhere out there the flakes are already falling! Snow has a way of stirring up emotions and shaping language in ways that say a lot about culture.

In literature, snow often symbolizes danger or isolation. Yet plenty of expressions flip the script and make cold weather feel warm and affectionate. Think of how calling someone a little snowflake can sound tender, or how a cold drink on a hot day suddenly feels inviting. At the same time, phrases like ice queen or cold feet can create emotional distance.
It all depends on where we are, what we have lived, and how language reflects our experiences.

We put together a look at how different cultures talk about snow, which languages have collected the most words for it, and a few global winter activities that bring people together. Explore it all via the link in bio. ❄️

We're on the fourth night of Hanukkah (Dec 14-20) We're on the fourth night of Hanukkah (Dec 14-20) and wishing everyone who celebrates a happy one! ✨

In true Cultural Mixology spirit, did you know that…

🇮🇱 Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BCE, after the Maccabees reclaimed it from the Seleucid Empire. The holiday celebrates the miracle of the oil, where a single day’s supply of oil burned for eight days in the Temple menorah.

🇵🇱 In Poland, it was common to eat potato pancakes, or “latkes,” during Hanukkah because potatoes were inexpensive and widely available. Today, latkes are a beloved treat around the world, often served with applesauce or sour cream.

🇺🇸 Dreidel games became popular in the U.S. in the early 20th century. This spinning top, inscribed with Hebrew letters נ (Nun), ג (Gimel), ה (Hei), ש (Shin) in the U.S., stands for “Nes Gadol Haya Sham” (“A great miracle happened there”), referring to the Hanukkah miracle. In Israel, the dreidel letters are נ (Nun), ג (Gimel), ה (Hei), פ (Pei), for “Nes Gadol Haya Po” (“A great miracle happened here”).

May your menorahs shine brightly, your latkes be golden, and your celebration be full of warmth and joy!
