From academic calendars to first-day rituals, ever From academic calendars to first-day rituals, every country marks the return to class in its own way.

In Japan, the school year begins in April alongside cherry blossom season, a reminder of growth and renewal. In France, the rentrée scolaire is a national moment that signals a wider return to structure after summer, not just for students, but for business, media, and public life.

Even the classroom itself reflects cultural values. In Finland, teachers are highly trained and trusted with significant autonomy. In the United States, participation and asking questions are often seen as key to learning and success.

And in places like China, teachers are deeply respected as both educators and moral guides, reflecting long-standing Confucian traditions.

What looks like “school” is really a reflection of how societies think about learning, authority, and future roles.

The lesser known, yet very significant Muslim holi The lesser known, yet very significant Muslim holiday of Mawlid al-Nabi (مَولِد النَبي) is coming up this week on August 25th and it will bring together Islamic communities around the world in celebration of the Prophet Muhammad.

The name of the holiday reveals its purpose: Mawlid al-nabi translates to “birthday of the Prophet.”

Most countries with majority Muslim populations across the Middle East, North Africa, and South/Southeast Asia celebrate Mawlid al-Nabi, but don’t assume that it’s celebrated by Muslims everywhere. 😉 For instance, in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, most people don't celebrate. It’s not even a public holiday and the day passes just like any other.

Curious about why? Head to the link in bio to learn that and more.

Move fast, deliver faster. South Korea has a st Move fast, deliver faster.

South Korea has a strong ppalli-ppalli (빨리빨리), literally “hurry-hurry” culture. This mindset developed during rapid industrialization and continues to shape expectations around speed, efficiency, and responsiveness in the workplace. People take deadlines seriously so expect work to move quickly without constant reminders.

It’s not just about rushing; speed is paired with precision. Quick turnaround and careful execution are both valued. You may notice requests coming in at the last minute or priorities shifting rapidly. Rather than waiting to confirm every detail, respond promptly. Even if it’s just an update on next steps, it signals that you understand the rhythm of the workplace.

Ppalli-ppalli also applies to teamwork. Teams adapt quickly to changes, communicate frequently, and coordinate tasks in real time. Confirm priorities, flag potential delays early, and clarify expectations when needed. Over time, you’ll see that ppalli-ppalli isn’t just about urgency. It reflects a shared commitment to progress, results, and keeping projects moving smoothly.

Hurry over to the link in bio for two more tips on working with South Korean colleagues. 😉

Doing business in Chile? Tip #1: know how to speak Doing business in Chile? Tip #1: know how to speak the language.

Of course, learning Spanish is important, but there’s more to it. Chilean communication is highly expressive yet indirect. People often guide conversations toward the topics they want to discuss rather than being abrupt. Paying attention to nonverbal cues will help you follow the flow.

Learning local slang goes a long way. Some common expressions:

🇨🇱 Cachai? – “You know?” or “get it?”

🇨🇱 Weón (huevón) – can mean dude, friend, idiot, or simply a person depending on context

🇨🇱 Sí poh – an emphasized “yes, of course!”

Even small efforts to speak like a local show respect and help you build rapport. Take the time to listen, practice these nuances, and notice how conversations shift.

Measurement systems rarely spark debate, yet they Measurement systems rarely spark debate, yet they quietly shape how we navigate everyday life, from checking the weather to buying screws in the right size.

Most of the world uses metric units. The United States still relies on imperial measurements like inches, miles, and gallons. Liberia and Myanmar use mixed systems, including older British and customary units.

It may look like a few countries refusing to move on, but the reality is rooted in history, economics, and habit. Even countries that “converted” still live with hybrids:

🇨🇦 Canada sells gasoline by the liter but tracks weight in pounds

🇬🇧 Drivers in the UK follow speed limits in miles, yet medical charts use metric

🇦🇺 Australia switched to metric in the 1970s, but recipes, wine, and portion sizes often still follow older conventions

These mixed systems are a reminder that standardization rarely marches in a straight line.

Whether you’re team metric or imperial, check out the infographic at the link in bio. It makes conversions easier and helps you see when units collide. 😉

What’s in a name? In Iceland, quite a lot. A What’s in a name?

In Iceland, quite a lot.

A name doesn’t just identify someone. It reflects family connection, language, and a strong commitment to tradition.

Instead of fixed family surnames, Iceland uses a patronymic (and sometimes matronymic) system. A child’s last name is created from a parent’s first name:

-son for sons
-dóttir for daughters

That means siblings can have different last names. And last names don’t necessarily tell you who is related to whom.

Parents can also choose to pass down the mother’s name, a practice that’s becoming more common and reflects Iceland’s broader focus on gender equality.

There are even guidelines around first names. To preserve the language, new names must be approved and fit Icelandic grammar.

And one more thing: in everyday life, people go by their first names. Even in professional settings. It’s a small shift, but it says a lot about how identity and hierarchy are viewed.

Pakikisama (from paki “please” + sama “to go along Pakikisama (from paki “please” + sama “to go along”): companionship or going along with others.

Maintaining smooth relationships and group harmony is at the heart of Filipino culture. Workplaces in the Philippines often feel like extended families, where cooperation and camaraderie drive productivity.

Colleagues go out of their way to help one another, and leaders are expected to be approachable and supportive.

To build trust, take time to get to know people personally. A friendly greeting, remembering personal or professional details, or sharing a coffee break goes a long way. Filipinos appreciate genuine warmth and are quick to reciprocate with loyalty and enthusiasm. Participating in informal team activities or joining small celebrations signals respect and strengthens connections.

While pakikisama encourages collaboration and goodwill, it can sometimes prioritize group harmony over blunt honesty. So, remember to be mindful of relationship dynamics.

Chag Sameach to those celebrating Passover tonight Chag Sameach to those celebrating Passover tonight!

At many Seders, the evening begins with a moment of curiosity: the Four Questions.

Traditionally, the youngest person at the table asks them, starting with Ma Nishtana: “Why is this night different from all other nights?” It’s a simple question that opens the door to the entire Passover story: a journey from slavery to freedom.

We really appreciate that a central part of the tradition is… asking questions. Curiosity isn’t just welcomed, it’s built into the ritual.

If you’re feeling curious yourself, we put together a short Passover quiz. You might know more than you think. 😉 Find it at the link in bio.

Wishing everyone celebrating a meaningful and joyful holiday.
