Today is World Snow Day and we know that somewhere Today is World Snow Day and we know that somewhere out there the flakes are already falling! Snow has a way of stirring up emotions and shaping language in ways that say a lot about culture.

In literature, snow often symbolizes danger or isolation. Yet plenty of expressions flip the script and make cold weather feel warm and affectionate. Think of how calling someone a little snowflake can sound tender, or how a cold drink on a hot day suddenly feels inviting. At the same time, phrases like ice queen or cold feet can create emotional distance.
It all depends on where we are, what we have lived, and how language reflects our experiences.

We put together a look at how different cultures talk about snow, which languages have collected the most words for it, and a few global winter activities that bring people together. Explore it all via the link in bio. ❄️

In true Cultural Mixology spirit, did you know that…

🇮🇱 Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BCE, after the Maccabees reclaimed it from the Seleucid Empire. The holiday celebrates the miracle of the oil, where a single day’s supply of oil burned for eight days in the Temple menorah.

🇵🇱 In Poland, it was common to eat potato pancakes, or “latkes,” during Hanukkah because potatoes were inexpensive and widely available. Today, latkes are a beloved treat around the world, often served with applesauce or sour cream.

🇺🇸 Dreidel games became popular in the U.S. in the early 20th century. This spinning top, inscribed with Hebrew letters נ (Nun), ג (Gimel), ה (Hei), ש (Shin) in the U.S., stands for “Nes Gadol Haya Sham” (“A great miracle happened there”), referring to the Hanukkah miracle. In Israel, the dreidel letters are נ (Nun), ג (Gimel), ה (Hei), פ (Pei), for “Nes Gadol Haya Po” (“A great miracle happened here”).

May your menorahs shine brightly, your latkes be golden, and your celebration be full of warmth and joy!

The end of the year is full of reasons to raise a The end of the year is full of reasons to raise a glass, whether it’s for holiday parties, family traditions, or ringing in the New Year.

But before the toast, there’s an important question: who is actually allowed to drink?

Around the world, drinking ages and alcohol laws vary widely, shaped by culture, religion, history, and ideas about health and safety. From formal toasts to informal customs, these rules reflect much more than just numbers on a page. They reveal the values and traditions of a society.

Even if you don’t drink, understanding local laws and practices can help you navigate social situations more smoothly when living, working, or traveling abroad.

We hope everyone in the U.S. (and abroad) who cele We hope everyone in the U.S. (and abroad) who celebrates Thanksgiving is gearing up to enjoy a meaningful holiday!

But let’s talk about the extension of the holiday you might already feel: Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and Giving Tuesday.

The term “Black Friday” didn’t start as a marketing gimmick. In the 1950s and ’60s, Philadelphia police used it to describe the headaches caused by crowds, traffic, and shoplifting after Thanksgiving, especially when people were descending on the city for the Army-Navy football game on Saturday.

Retailers didn’t love the negative connotation, so beginning in the 1980s they leaned into a more flattering version: Black Friday as the moment when stores move from “in the red” to “in the black,” i.e. finally making a profit.

Over time, the shopping frenzy has grown. Small Business Saturday was created to encourage shoppers to support local and independent businesses. Cyber Monday emerged with the rise of online shopping. And Giving Tuesday was added to shift the focus from buying to generosity.

So whether you’re planning to browse big retail deals, shop local, click “add to cart,” or support a cause you care about, you’re participating in a longer holiday story than you might realize. 😉

Across the globe, fashion has the power to communicate a culture’s values and history. This includes everything from the symbolism of colors to adherence to specific dress codes for various occasions. Fashion around the world is yet another example of how #culturematters.

And you may already know more about cultural fashion than you think! For example, the word dirndl may not necessarily ring a bell. But if we mention Oktoberfest, you’ll likely be able to picture this folk dress traditional to Austria, Switzerland, and of course, Germany.

Even the most experienced leaders hit walls...misu Even the most experienced leaders hit walls...misunderstood intentions, teams that don’t gel, or the chaos of a new role. Coaching doesn’t bulldoze those walls. It helps you figure out how to get over them.

You start noticing patterns you’d never seen, make small shifts that have big effects, and gain clarity on how to act next. For expats and global leaders, that means reading cultural signals right, building trust quickly, and leading confidently even when everything feels unfamiliar.

Coaching isn’t hand-holding. It’s making space to think, act, and move forward, so the results you want don’t stay out of reach.
