Halloween is here, and with it comes the beginning Halloween is here, and with it comes the beginning of s p o o k y s e a s o n!⁠ ⁠ Did you ever wonder where trick or treating came from? We did! And in trying to figure it out, we must confess that we aren’t 100% sure! ⁠ ⁠ While the precise origins of the phrase “trick or treat” are unknown, there is a rich history of traditions that led up to the modern day activity, including⁠… ⁠ 🎃 Souling: A tradition that began during Samhain in which poor children would go door-to-door begging for food and money. In exchange, they would pray for the souls of their neighbors’ deceased loved ones. ⁠ ⁠ 🎃 Mumming: Once Christianity reached the countries that celebrated Samhain and it became All Hallow’s Eve, the tradition of souling evolved. Instead of just promising prayer, young people would sing, recite poems, tell jokes, or do some other “trick” before getting a treat, usually fruits, nuts, or coins.⁠ ⁠ 🎃 Guising: Halloween costumes originated in this medieval tradition of disguising oneself as a ghost to blend in with the spirits who emerged during Samhain. Later when the holiday became All Hallow’s Eve, people dressed up as angels, saints, and devils as they bargained for treats.⁠ ⁠ 🎃 Tricks: The “trick” part of trick or treating took a turn for the worse in the 1920s, when souling turned into pranking and devolved into vandalism and crime during the Great Depression. In the 1930s, community based trick or treating traditions aimed to bring order to the chaos and keep communities safe on Halloween night.⁠ ⁠ 🎃 Candy: The tradition of trick or treating was somewhat curtailed by sugar rations during World War II. Quechua, often referred to as Runasimi (“the peo Quechua, often referred to as Runasimi (“the people’s language”), was the language of the Inca Empire. Nowadays, there are approximately eight million people who still speak the language, which makes it the most commonly spoken native language in South America. ⁠ ⁠ Learning a few basic expressions in Quechua can be of great help before traveling to Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia in particular in the South American Andes. For example:⁠ ⁠ Allianchu: “Hello, how are you?”⁠ ⁠ To become friends with the warm-hearted indigenous people of the Andes, start by saying allianchu. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, "The first Thanksgiving by Europeans in North America was held by Sir Martin Frobisher and his crew in the Eastern Arctic in 1578. They ate a meal of salt beef, biscuits, and mushy peas to celebrate and give thanks for their safe arrival in what is now Nunavut."⁠ ⁠ It was a moment of gratitude for surviving the treacherous voyage, rather than a harvest festival, which differs from the more traditional concept of Thanksgiving that developed later in Canada and the US.⁠ ⁠ It wasn’t until 1957 that the Canadian Parliament officially declared Thanksgiving a national holiday "for general thanksgiving to Almighty God for the blessings of the harvest." Today marks the first yahrzeit (the Jewish anniver Today marks the first yahrzeit (the Jewish anniversary of a death) of October 7th, when Hamas launched the deadliest attack on Jews since the Holocaust. Citizens from countries around the world, including the US, France, Thailand, and more, were also among those murdered and taken hostage. ⁠ ⁠ We will be lighting a yahrzeit candle today to honor the memory of one of these victims: Somkuan Pansa-ard. Somkuan was a Thai national who came to Israel three months earlier to earn money to support his family as their sole breadwinner.
